Take some time out away from the vast open savannahs to explore Kenya's colourful colonial past and its key role in ancient global trade routes before soaking up the coastal beauty and white sands of Diani and Malindi

Fort Jesus

Sitting on the edge of the Indian Ocean, Mombasa’s is Kenya’s second city full of colonial history and a diverse blend of cultures, from the Portuguese and British colonists to the African, Arab and Asian traders who made the town their home.

Fort Jesus is a 17thcentury UNESCO World Heritage site that was constructed under the orders Portuguese King Philip to protect the port of Mombasa.

It was variously occupied by Portuguese, Arab, African and then British forces, before Kenya’s independence.

Mariner art

You’ll be guided around the Fort, as you’ll see how it dominated the narrow passage into Mombasa harbour, as Portugal sought to maintain its Indian Ocean trade route.

Try to see all the ancient cannon and the ship’s anchor. There’s also a great display of ancient mariner wall art.

The Fort itself is built in the shape of a man when viewed from above.

Spend a half day here to learn more about its fascinating and bloody history.

Accessibility

We believe Fort Jesus is accessible, but there are steps to the entrance. Wheelchair users must be lifted in their chair up the stairs to enjoy the site. Don’t be put off though, this absorbing piece of history should not be missed.

Diani and Malindi

After spending the day in Mombasa head 30km down the coast to Diani to enjoy some chill time on the beach.

Diani’s beautiful white sands make it a top tourist drawer. And there are a whole host of activities you can enjoy. In the air, there’s parachuting and kitesurfing; in the water, snorkelling and scuba diving.

Or you might just want to kick back and soak up the sun. Maasai tradesmen might tempt you to take a camel ride.

120km north of Mombasa is Malindi, where the two great 15th century explorers Zheng He and Vasco De Gama once visited.

As Malindi is further away from Mombasa we can help you plan a longer stay.
